American footwear designer Salehe Bembury is leaving Versace to launch his own brand in 2021.

Bembury, who was named 2020’s footwear designer of the year, has been with the Italian luxury house since 2017, serving as the vice president of sneakers and men’s footwear.

“Donatella [Versace] offered me a life changing opportunity, and Versace offered me a platform. Often, individuals that look like me are not put in the same position. This significant detail was not taken for granted and ultimately I hope that my role is used as a vehicle for progress. I am forever grateful for what was bestowed upon me and extremely proud of what we were able to achieve,” Bembury said in a statement.

In his time at Versace, Bembury has played an instrumental role in revitalizing the company’s sneaker business. Some of his most notable creations include an Apple-inspired retro sneaker, jungle print Squalo sneakers, 2 Chainz-approved Chain Reaction sneakers and Trigreca sneakers, which draw inspiration from Versace’s Greca and Medusa pattern, Hypebeast reported.

While Bembury has so far refrained from divulging details on his upcoming brand, he plans to continue working on his collaboration with New Balance and Chinese sports brand ANTA. The two partnerships have reportedly produced one of the most regarded sneakers this year and two high-tech and affordable hiking shoes, respectively.
