Checkout-Free Convenience Store Dubbed Market Next Opens At The University Of Houston

The University of Houston and its campus dining partner Chartwells Higher Education are partnering up with Standard to offer checkout-free retail and dining services at its Market Next store, according to a press release.

Standard, formerly known as Standard Cognition, is an AI company that provides autonomous checkout systems that rely on machine-vision software and a camera-based system, enabling round-the-clock access to snacks, coffee, and others items intended for on-the-go consumption.

The tech enables customers to pay for their items without having to actually visit a self-checkout station or checkout counter in general. The university reported its fastest full shopping trip with the Standard platform to be 2.3 seconds long, which makes it particularly appealing to students running late for a class or just looking to buy products on the go.

“Students’ tastes change constantly, and we’re well equipped to handle that. But their shopping preferences evolve too, and we want to continue providing new and unique shopping experiences that are unexpected on a college campus,” said David Riddle, Vice President of Operations for Chartwells Higher Ed, District Manager for UH System Dining.

Similar technology is already being deployed by players such as Amazon and Giant Eagle. This summer, Amazon launched its own contactless tech which featured smart shopping carts that track items as shoppers add them and can automatically charge them when grocery bags are removed, allowing shoppers to skip the checkout line entirely.

“This is the future of shopping, and with autonomous checkout through Standard, we’ve made it as easy, safe and convenient as possible for students to come in, get what they need, and go,” said Riddle.

Chartwells and Standard have also opened a checkout-free store in North Carolina and have another planned to open in Ontario. The duo is also actively working together to bring a series of stores across the country.

“Market Next is the first retail store in the world to be retrofitted for a 100 percent cashierless, checkout-free experience,” said Jordan Fisher, Co-Founder and CEO of Standard. “Our platform is the only system on the market proven to retrofit an entire retail experience. Innovative retailers like Chartwells use the AI-powered Standard platform to enable shoppers to grab any product they want and simply walk out, without waiting in line. We are excited to partner with Chartwells to deliver this groundbreaking technology to more locations around the country.”
