All through the coronavirus pandemic, Kroger made efforts to promote its own Kroger Pay program over accepting other mobile wallets such as Google Pay and Apple Pay, until now.

In a company press release, Kroger announced its plans to pilot contactless payments at 61 locations within the company’s QFC division around Seattle, WA. As part of the program, the company will accept Google Pay, Apple Pay as well as other mobile wallets. The program is aimed at offering shoppers another form of payment to choose from and enabling a more seamless checkout experience.

The company has yet to announce when the pilot program will begin and if the supermarket chain will expand the program beyond its 61 locations.

“QFC is excited to pilot contactless payments powered by NFC technology, providing our customers with an additional way to pay for their fresh food and household essentials,” said Chris Albi, president of QFC.

“The contactless payment solution will help make life easier for many of our customers and provide the freedom of choice among various options, including cash, debit, credit and check.”

Kroger, which is the largest supermarket by revenue, took a similar approach to Walmart, which launched Walmart Pay in 2015. But the company has since come to terms that there needs to be more to their payments offering.

“Kroger continues to invest in innovative technologies that advance the customer experience, including our payment systems,” said Kathy Hanna, Kroger’s senior director of payments. “Providing our customers with flexibility – whether that means having the option to choose between shopping in-store or online for groceries or how you pay for them – we are committed to personalizing their shopping trip.”

Kroger QFC customers can also pay for items via Samsung Pay, Fitbit Pay as well as other banking applications and contactless chip cards.

Kroger’s own mobile wallet, Kroger Pay, is a touchless mobile payment option that combines a customer’s payment and loyalty card information to create a faster checkout experience. Its Scan, Bag, Go technology enables customers to scan their groceries using their mobile device, bag their own purchases and pay via the Kroger app. Users can also place orders for free pickup and delivery.
