Amazon To Open A Hair Salon In London

Amazon is planning to debut a hair salon in East London – a move that signals the company’s continued effort to explore new business lines.

The Amazon Salon will be spread over two floors in Spitalfields, a trendy district of London that is known for its dining and shopping scene.

The 1,500 square foot location will remain open seven days a week but will initially remain accessible to just Amazon employees. The location is a five-minute walk from the company’s U.K. headquarters, which can accommodate up to 5,000 people. The salon will become open to the public in the coming weeks and appointments can be made by calling, emailing, or just showing up at the salon, Amazon noted in a blog post.

“We have designed this salon for customers to come and experience some of the best technology, hair care products and stylists in the industry,” said John Boumphrey, UK Country Manager, Amazon. “We want this unique venue to bring us one step closer to customers, and it will be a place where we can collaborate with the industry and test new technologies.”

The salon will feature the use of augmented reality technology, allowing customers to see what they will look like with different hair colors. Customers will also be able to use “point-and-learn” technology to point at a product in the salon and view information on a display screen. Customers who wish to order the item can do so by scanning the product’s QR code. The QR code will redirect the customer to a product page on Amazon.co.uk to complete their order.

“We have designed this salon for customers to come and experience some of the best technology, hair care products and stylists in the industry,” said John Boumphrey, U.K. country manager at Amazon. “We want this unique venue to bring us one step closer to customers, and it will be a place where we can collaborate with the industry and test new technologies.”

While the company has no immediate plans to open other locations, the company’s move to open other stores could disrupt the salon business in the U.K. and beyond — much like the company did with the opening of its online book store in 1994.
