Shanghai Fashion Week has been postponed to the second week of April with a recent resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the city, leading luxury brands and department stores to tighten their safety protocols and reevaluate plans to organize in-person events.

Some of the other brands that have been forced to take their events online include Canada Goose and Cartier. Last week, the Canadian parka maker had planned to host an in-person event at Shanghai IAPM, an upscale mall in the city, in collaboration with Netflix breakout star Angel Chen. The event was, however, called off and streamed on WeChat instead. Similarly, Cartier canceled an offline event that was to be hosted last week to celebrate its first year anniversary on Alibaba’s Tmall, according to Vogue Business.

These cancellations come less than two weeks from Chinese New Year, which is seen as a significant sales driver for retailers as consumers spend more money on travel and shopping. Chinese consumers account for a third of global luxury spend.

“Should the country fail to contain the spread of the virus, new lockdowns cannot be ruled out, which could have a far bigger impact on sales than travel restrictions alone,” according to UBS analysts.
