Luxury travel essentials company RIMOWA is set to auction a digital artworks collection called “Blueprints from the Metaverse” on May 18, 2021. The company’s move to sell Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) comes at a time when there is growing interest in NFTs – a one-of-a-kind digital asset that is secured by blockchain technology.
“The collection explores the idea of future movement through the imaginative retelling of airline memorabilia in new contexts. Using RIMOWA’s most iconic materials, NUOVA conceived four physical artifacts that chronicled this narrative. Once complete, these artifacts were transformed into digital artworks, demonstrating how mementos from RIMOWA’s past can stand at the forefront of the most thrilling new developments in the art world today,” said the company in a statement.
The brand has partnered with multidisciplinary design firm Nuova to develop the four digital artifacts, which showcase a table, a food cart, a lamp and a sound system.
RIMOWA’s moves to offer its own NFTs makes it the first luxury travel brand to create and sell a digital collection.
In early March, design studio RTFKT and an 18-year old digital artist named Fewocious generated $3.1 million off of 621 pairs of NFT shoes in a matter of seven minutes. Before the sale began, potential bidders had the opportunity to “try on” the virtual sneakers via Snapchat.
As part of the sale, three styles of sneakers were made available in addition to digital merchandise dubbed ‘Drip’ and ‘Charm.’ The sale of ‘Charm’ merchandise generated $88,880, while the ‘Drip’ merchandise sold for $1500 each and was later reportedly found on the resale market for $5,000 each.
The sale caught the eye of investors and left many wondering what NFTs could mean for the future of the fashion industry.
