Google Introduces Black-Owned Business Distinction

In an effort to help consumers easily find and purchase from Black-owned businesses, Google has rolled out a Black-owned attribute to its Shopping tab.

The introduction of the new feature came as Google found that within the past 12 months, Google search interest for “black-owned businesses” skyrocketed a whopping 600 percent.

“Across the country, people have been looking for “black-owned restaurants,” “black-owned bookstores,” “black-owned beauty supply” and more, which speaks to the diversity within the Black business community,” said Attica Jaques, Director of Brand Marketing, Consumer Apps at Google.

“We want to make it easier for people to support and spend dollars with the Black businesses they love. Starting today, we’re extending the Black-owned attribute to Google’s Shopping tab, so people can easily identify and buy from Black-owned businesses on Google.”

Black-owned business owners can choose to be listed in the Shopping tab by visiting the Google Merchant Help Center. The feature will become visible to shoppers and available to all U.S. Google Merchants in the next coming months.

The latest rollout follows another Black-owned business attribute Google launched across Google Search and Maps last summer.
