Facebook announced today that it will begin testing ads on Instagram Reels in Australia, Brazil, India and Germany, as the company seeks to monetize its short-form video product that rivals TikTok.

The company’s move to include ads in Instagram Reels will benefit it, especially in India’s fast-growing social media market – the government moved to ban TikTok last year over security concerns. The social media giant also plans to test out other features in the Indian market, such as allowing content creators to share their Reels on their Facebook account.

The rollout of ads is an “indication of how strong the momentum is for Reels,” said Carolyn Everson, vice president of global business group at Facebook.

The company will allow advertisers to select various categories of video content they want to place their ads in, including Reels that are focussed on children and parenting, animals and pets or fitness and workouts.

“This is a big deal for marketers,” Everson said.

The effort marks the biggest move the company has made to let brands advertise across various content verticals. Up until now, Facebook had only allowed advertisers to choose their target audience based on their interest, Reuters reported.

Facebook also announced that it will be launching sticker ads for Facebook Stories, which will allow brands to create stickers that users can then place in their Stores. This will open a new revenue stream for influencers, who can earn a cut of sales made through their placement of sticker ads. The launch of this feature comes at a time when content creators are reportedly making more money directly from fans and followers through platforms such as Clubhouse and Patreon.
