Allbirds Eyes Athleisure Market With Launch Of New Collection

Allbirds is debuting a new line of athleisure products, including shorts, leggings and tank tops, as it looks to cut itself a share of the lucrative activewear market, which is valued at more than $113 billion.

The brand, which is known for its wool sneakers, is taking an environment-friendly approach to designing athleisure wear. Instead of using synthetic fibers such as polyester, the company’s new collection features all-natural fibers. Allbirds is also labeling each product with its carbon footprint and will work toward offsetting that with other initiatives.

“As with all of our products, we packed Natural Run Apparel full of premium natural fibers, designed with carbon consciousness in mind,” the company said.

“Unlike most sportswear brands that put their innovation muscle into oil-based plastic or default to off-the-rack synthetic material blends, we invest our R&D resources into developing low-emission natural alternatives while prioritizing recycled resources to fill in the gaps.”

The launch of the collection comes four months after it was revealed that the company is in talks with U.S. banks to file for an initial public offering. Earlier this year, the company also launched a running shoe collection, putting the company in direct competition with major sports retailers such as Adidas and Nike.

The company currently operates 23 stores in major cities such as Berlin, London, Shanghai and Tokyo. The company has so far raised $200 million and it was last valued at $1.7 billion.
