Zalando Is Planning To Expand Into The US Market

European eTailer Zalando is working on a secret initiative called Project Kangaroo with the goal of entering the U.S. market by early 2023.

The company is planning to make an investment of more than $100 million to fund the project and has already hired more than 100 employees to work on it. The project is being led by former Amazon executive Jim Freeman, who now serves as Zalando’s chief business and product officer.

While Zalando declined to confirm its plans to expand into the U.S. market, it has not ruled them out either, FashionUnited reported.

“In recent years, we have made great progress on our growth path in Europe. We are continuously looking for opportunities to improve our offer, including possible new categories and regions,” the company said.

“We believe that there will also be opportunities to grow beyond the European continent in this context. In the current economic environment, we are focused on serving our customers and partners in existing Zalando markets in the best possible way.”

To launch its business in the U.S., the company is working on developing its marketing strategy, which is expected to rely more heavily on tapping popular influencers that can help quickly raise brand awareness and trust.
