Reebok is planning to lay off approximately 150 employees as its sale to Authentic Brands is expected to close by February 28, 2022.

Most of the layoffs are expected to impact employees across various departments located at Reebok’s headquarters in Boston, MA, where it employs 600 workers. The company has a total workforce of 4,200 people.

The layoffs are part of a restructuring effort, which the company is kicking into high gear nearly five months after Adidas announced its plans to sell the Reebok brand for roughly $2.5 billion.

Matt O’Toole, the president at Reebok, informed employees about the layoffs during a Zoom meeting on January 19, 2022, and said the layoffs would take place by the end of February 2022.

“It goes without saying that today has been a tough day,” O’Toole said via e-mail to employees. “And knowing this day was coming does not make the reality of it any easier.”

O’Toole said the layoffs are necessary and that they are aimed at supporting an “entirely different operating model” under its new ownership.

The Boston Globe was the first to break the news.
