As Inflation Continues Instacart Looks To Increase Access To Healthy Foods With Discounted Membership for SNAP Members

Delivery service platform Instacart is looking to blunt the impact of inflation on the cost of groceries and essential everyday products with the launch of a new, discounted Instacart+ membership for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) participants nationwide.

According to the USDA, more than 10% of people in the U.S. lack reliable access to affordable and nutritious food. However, offering easy access to online shopping can help low-income families, including SNAP households, stretch their food budgets, assist with meal planning, and save time and money.

“Our research has shown that online grocery shopping can provide very real benefits for families on tight food budgets, including SNAP recipients,” said Courtney Smith, senior vice president of program research, innovation and impact at No Kid Hungry.

“Instacart’s discounted membership for SNAP recipients is one solution that can help more food-insecure families tap into the many benefits of online grocery – including saving time, managing their budgets, and reducing transportation barriers. We applaud Instacart for swiftly taking action to respond to the research findings and helping more families access the nutritious food they need.”

To drive uptake, Instacart is allowing anyone who has used an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) SNAP card to purchase groceries on Instacart within the past six months to obtain a discounted Instacart+ membership for just $4.99/month (50% off) for the next 12 months.

In addition, these households will gain access to free delivery and pickup on orders of $35 or more and receive 5% credit back on pickup orders and reduced service fees on every order.
