Apple is starting to manufacture its iPhone 14 smartphones in India as it looks to diversify its supply chain and reduce its dependence on China.

The company will produce 5% of its iPhone 14 devices in India by late 2022 and has plans to make 25% of all iPhones in the country by 2025. These devices will be sold locally and exported to other international markets.

“The new iPhone 14 lineup introduces groundbreaking new technologies and important safety capabilities. We are excited to be manufacturing iPhone 14 in India,” the company said in a statement.

The announcement marks a significant shift in Apple’s strategy and comes at a time when many U.S. businesses are starting to move their manufacturing out of China, which has seen significant disruptions due to its strict zero-Covid policy and raised the need for diversification of supply chains. In addition, the ongoing tensions between the U.S. and China over Taiwan’s independence are creating new risks for American businesses.

Apple’s decision to move part of its manufacturing to India also comes at a time when it is beginning to see growth potential in the country. India currently accounts for just 3.8% of Apple’s market, with low-cost competitors such as Samsung and China’s Xiaomi mainly dominating the market.
