Walmart plans to build a network of thousands of electric vehicle charging stations at its Walmart Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, as well as Sam’s Club stores across the U.S.

The effort will put EV charging stations within reach for the bulk of the U.S. population, as 90% of Americans live within 10 miles of a Walmart store or Sam’s Club location.

The company currently operates 1,300 EV charging stations that are spread across 280 stores.

“We can offer customers and members the convenience of being able to pick up essentials for their families or grab a bite to eat while they charge,” said Vishal Kapadia, senior vice president, energy transformation for Walmart, adding that the company plans to offer everyday low prices for EV charging.

Walmart also expects its vast network of EV charging stations to help consumers overcome their hesitance with getting an electric vehicle, as they will be able to able to charge their cars when traveling long distances easily.

“Easy access to on-the-go charging is a game-changer for drivers who have been hesitant to purchase an EV for concerns they won’t be able to find a charger in a clean, bright and safe location when needed,” Kapadia added.

Walmart’s announcement comes days before the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is set to propose sweeping rules that would cut vehicle emissions and push automakers to increase their production of electric vehicles dramatically.

The proposed rules will result in at least 50% of vehicles in the U.S. being either fully electric or plug-in hybrids by 2030.
