The upcoming release of the live-action remake of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is already causing waves in the fashion industry.
A recent analysis of Google search data by fashion site Nasty Gal has revealed that searches for ‘purple bikini’ have skyrocketed to over triple the average in just one day. This surge in interest can be attributed to the new poster for the film, which features the movie’s star, Halle Bailey, in a purple bikini.
But that’s not all – searches for ‘mermaid style’ have also risen by 171% worldwide, and searches for ‘shell bikini,’ Ariel’s signature bikini style, have seen an increase of 244% since the release of the poster. But the trend is not limited to just one region or demographic, as the data shows that people all over the world are interested in these styles, suggesting a growing global fascination with mermaid-inspired swimwear.
Furthermore, the buzz around the film’s release is also driving anticipation for its star-studded cast. In addition to Bailey, the movie is directed by Rob Marshall and features Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, Jonah Hauer-King, and more.
“The Little Mermaid has been an iconic part of popular culture, from Ariel’s instantly recognizable outfit to the catchy soundtrack. The newly released movie poster has caused a buzz online with fans eagerly awaiting the movie, which is set to be released later this month,” said a Nasty Gal spokesperson.
“As these findings show, the excitement has also transcended into the fashion space, with many fans wanting to emulate Ariel’s iconic style, indicating that purple tones, mermaid-inspired swimwear, and bright patterns are set to make a big comeback this Summer.”
